DITO Plants 1,000 Bamboos to Restore Mt. Arayat Landslide Area

DITO Plants 1,000 Bamboos to Restore Mt. Arayat Landslide Area.On November 8, 2024, DITO Telecommunity planted 1,000 bamboo seedlings in a landslide-prone area of Mt. Arayat in the Philippines. Planting took place in Brgy. In the Treehouse of San Juan Bao, Arayat, Pampanga. Bamboo seedlings were planted as part of DITO’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) efforts to promote sustainable practices and reduce environmental risks.

A Tribute to Resilience and a Call to Action

The chosen site for this reforestation effort has a tragic history, having suffered a severe landslide triggered by Typhoon Ondoy in 2012. The calamity claimed 12 lives, leaving a lasting impact on the local community. Over a decade later, this tree-planting initiative aims to not only restore the environment but also reinforce the community’s resilience against future natural disasters.

“Today’s tree planting is not just an act of environmental stewardship; it is an investment in the future of our communities,” said DITO CEO Eric R. Alberto. “By planting trees, we strengthen our ecosystems, reduce risks from natural disasters, and create a healthier, more sustainable environment for generations to come.”

The Role of Bamboo in Mitigating Landslide Risks

Bamboo was chosen for its remarkable environmental benefits. Known for its rapid growth, soil stabilization properties, and resilience, bamboo is an ideal species for addressing soil erosion and preventing landslides. Its robust root system helps bind the soil, reducing the risk of land displacement in areas prone to such hazards.

A Collaborative Effort for Sustainability

The event brought together a diverse group of stakeholders, including:

  • Representatives from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR)
  • Barangay officials from San Juan Baño
  • Upland farmers
  • Personnel from the 70th Infantry Battalion of the Philippine Army

The collaborative nature of the event underscores the importance of partnerships in addressing environmental challenges and promoting sustainable practices.

Beyond Tree Planting: DITO Broader CSR Vision

DITO Telecommunity efforts in Mt. Arayat align with its broader CSR vision to drive positive change through environmental sustainability, community engagement, and disaster preparedness. By actively participating in activities that support ecological balance and community well-being, DITO sets an example for other corporations to follow.

Conclusion

DITO Telecommunity bamboo planting initiative highlights its commitment to sustainability, disaster risk reduction, and community resilience. By restoring vulnerable areas, DITO reinforces its vision for a greener future, fostering collaboration and long-term environmental stewardship for generations to come.
